Ethics is the study of what is good and evil which affects how individuals make moral decisions. It serves as a guide for personal behavior and choices in our everyday life which concerns our rights and responsibilities. According to Murray & Henry, Scripture represents a revealed morality that addresses the Christian’s moral life. The Bible embraces the distinctiveness of life which gives specific guidelines for ethical decisions.
Scriptures guide us in righteousness and are used in our moral reflection as a guide, guard, by examples, and compass which could help make a wise decision in life. Meanwhile, Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals is a set of values that human must consider and adhere in their daily work basis which includes fundamental values such as acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness, objectivity, honoring cultural diversity, respecting the dignity and welfare of the people, and promoting self-determination (National Organization for Human Services, 2015).
Scripture contains important and relevant rules that may easily be applicable at work in which are straightforward. If scripture tells us to “work wholeheartedly for our earthly masters” (Colossians 3:22) then we must do it which can be applied similar to our boss at work. If the scripture “warns us against laziness and not taking responsibility for earning our keep” (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12), then it should be our work objective.
The scripture “You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15) and “Having a good conscience, so that when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame” (1 Peter 3:16) verses are also applicable at work hence we must adhere those commands. Human Service ethical standards have also principles such as “treating people better than they treat you” taking into account if you were in your customer or clients’ shoes which has implications of Matthew 5:43-48.
