A gap year from university is a period of break taken by an individual to pursue other interests which differ from the common line of study. Many students take a gap year for various reasons such as volunteering to work with government agencies, polishing leadership skills and focusing on their passion by engaging in interesting activities. A gap year should be planned adequately for an individual to benefit intellectually and personally from the period thus it is essential for parents to help their children in decision making. This essay aims to express my thoughts on the idea of taking a gap year before university.
It is not a good idea to take a gap year before university because students may find the break so interesting as they might make money or friends that distract them hence lose interest in going back to formal education. The studying skills of the students diminish which makes adjusting to the education system tough hence failing the complex technical and theoretical subjects that are not used outside the school (Vogt, 2018). The experience of travelling during the gap year makes the students struggle with adjusting to the school environment hence impacting them physically and emotionally (Vogt, 2018). Besides, some students end up not gaining the experiences they hoped for thus difficulties in being incorporated into universities that assess the constructiveness of the activities.
It is okay to take a gap year before university because the break from school helps one perform better in college. Students need to think of their passions in life, their career goals and their interests for them to make sound decisions before joining college. The one year gap allows students to make informed decisions regarding their future careers which is a crucial stage in life. Student`s develop an increased sense of self-awareness which is crucial in making life decisions (Dodge et al., 2019). Besides, students need to pursue career goals based on informed decisions. Students are made to experience how the world operates and understand the value of education in society. Thinking about the career path to undertake helps students put more effort into their studies when they join college.
The one year break between the end of high school and college allows students to make new friends and interact with people from diverse backgrounds. The new friends made in a non-educational setting are important because they end up being life-long friends (Hamid, Shokory & Awang, 2018). The friends that some students have while in high school go to colleges that are far from home hence losing touch after graduation.
