Same-sex Marriage
Modern society has many controversial matters, and one of the most developing cases is on same-sex marriage. In the recent past, marriage was known to exist between a man and a woman. However, as time developed the fight for personal rights intensified and affected customary unions. It is no longer a case across genders, and even the constitution provides for same-sex unions. For instance, the majority of states in America have legalized gay marriages and other parts in the world are following suit. As a result, such cases will continue to rise despite the pressure from church and other social groups on the need to stop legalization.
The topic is controversial due to some reasons. For one, legal bodies throughout the world are increasingly legalizing same-sex marriage despite the norm in most societies of opposite-sex couples. A perfect example is the 2014 ruling by the United States Supreme Court that all states should issue same-sex marriage licenses. Secondly, some groups remain grounded that same-sex marriage is also a type of marriage in that it is one way to protect and preserve an essential society's institutions (Rauch, 2013). Another reason is that it is hard to redefine marriage to include gays, and many cultures view the union between a man and a woman as the only foundation of society (Jones, 2013).
Cultures observe marriage differently, and the weight for or against marriage phenomenon as well varies. In many, however, the concept is viewed as a covenant between a man and a woman and proponents of same-sex unions endorses of an entirely different thing (McDowell & Stonestreet, 2014). The primary argument is that same-sex marriages are devoid of biological and psychological differences that complement a couple. Moreover, there is the denial of reproduction, which is the elemental purpose of many unions.
The continuation of the human race is highly valued by many communities hence the increased opposition despite support from various sectors. Many families oppose same-sex marriage to protect their own. According to Baunach (2012), the primary concern is that its sudden rise can influence many people hence the possibility of current couples breaking and start new unions with same-sex partners. Due to fear of negative impact, most couples oppose same-sex marriages. Other notable reasons behind increased opposition include the violation of natural law and denying a child a biological parent. It violates the natural law meanings in that it does not exist to do good for man and the doctrine is that people should evil (Dorf, 2011). However, the same idea attracts support from various avenues hence the challenge to eliminate. For instance, some people argue that the need for marriage is to unite, care for each other in times of need and grow old together which same-sex marriage can as well achieve (Rauch, 2013).
In conclusion, the debate on same-sex marriage will continue to attract contrasting opinions from many sides and the matter remains a controversy to date. The significant developments towards its approval are notable points to prove that its statistics will keep on rising and its influence a new feature. The current society is not strong enough
