Effects of Healthcare Reforms on Insurance Industry
The signing of the patient protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law in 2010 by the then-president Barack Obama completely revolutionized the health insurance industry in several different ways (Oliver, 2017). This Act has had vast and wide effects on the health insurance industry in the United States. One of the most notable effects of a healthcare reform such as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the monumental upward trajectory that deductibles, premiums and out-of-pocket costs took. Different plans sold on health insurance exchanges were the most affected by the increase in premium and other monetary deductibles (Oliver, 2017). Due to the reforms, individuals that had secured health plans on various health information exchanges but are yet to get government tax subsidies are now expected to pay increased monthly premiums than they had to before. Following the ACA's implementation, the overall cost of deductibles in states such as Mississippi, Washington and South Carolina rose significantly.
