Its usage increased significantly around 1975 because of its low cost, and in the intervening years, it has replaced sucrose as the primary sweetener in processed foods. Owing to its low cost, its use increased significantly around 1975, and it replaced sucrose as the vital sweetener in processed foods in the years that followed (Bansal et al., 2014). By the time they hit our plates, most foods we consume have been processed in some way. However, the question about packaged food is not about products such as canned tomatoes or canned tuna that are processed to lock in nutrients and freshness. The issue is about foods like jarred pasta sauces and cake mixes that are more highly refined.
