A common ingredient in packaged foods is high-fructose corn syrup. It is used by food manufacturers because it makes food as sweet as sugar but is less costly (Bansal et al., 2014). A corn-based sweetener is high-fructose corn syrup. It is about the same mix of glucose and fructose and can only be purchased by food manufacturers. Its usage increased significantly around 1975 because of its low cost, and in the intervening years, it has replaced sucrose as the primary sweetener in processed foods. High-fructose corn syrup is a corn-based sweetener. It is almost the same combination of glucose and fructose, and only food producers can buy it. By the time they hit our plates, most foods we consume have been processed in some way. However, the question about packaged food is not about products such as canned tomatoes or canned tuna that are processed to lock in nutrients and freshness. The issue is about foods like jarred pasta sauces and cake mixes that are more highly refined.
