Mental and verbal bullying refers to adverse treatments that individuals experience through verbal and perceptual abuse in different settings (Ostberg et al., 2018). These events considerably impact the regular nurturing and upbringing of both pubescent and prepubescent populations. Several studies concur that verbal and mental bullying contributes significantly to adolescents' psychosocial functioning (Zelviene et al., 2020). Expressly, mental and verbal bullying impair social, emotional, and psychosocial wellbeing by contributing to low self-esteem, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder among adolescent victims.
Initially, mental and verbal bullying can cause a lowered self-esteem among adolescents. Ostberg et al. (2018) hypothesize that bullying can contribute to distorted personal image and, therefore, inform psychosocial developments. Bullied adolescents tend to develop a poor conceptualization of their body image and functionality. Ostberg et al. (2018) affirm that victims of bullying cannot stand up for themselves; thus, they develop a lowered confidence and enhanced feelings of hopelessness. Consequently, self-doubt ensues as the adolescent tries to criticize themselves as to why they suffer bullying. Lowered self-esteem forces adolescents to withdraw from social gatherings due to heightened anxiety and insecurity, mostly if the bullying focuses on their physical outlook. Several studies suggest that mentally bullied victims find it difficult to make friends and meaningful life relationships later in life (Ostberg et al., 2018). Conclusively self-esteem often affects an individual's overall productivity by contributing to impaired task performances and completion.
Secondly, repeated bullying can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder. Often, victims of verbal and mental bullying suffer prolonged effects from these experiences. Zelviene et al. (2020) confirm that most individuals with adolescent mental abuse suffer impairment in copying with a future related stimulus, a clear manifestation of post-traumatic stress disorder. Pointedly, these adverse exposures negatively affect them long after the bullying has happened and sometimes throughout life. As a result, victims of bullying usually try to avoid places and people that remind them of their experience and prevent a similar event's recurrence (Zelviene et al.,2020). Notably, abused adolescents tend to develop sleep disorders like insomnia due to the event's emotional stress and memories. Extensively, individual bullying experiences considerably impair cerebral functioning and response following the initial exposure.
Finally, mental and verbal bullying contributes to depression among adolescents. Oriol et al. (2017) hypothesize that a high prevalence of maltreatments within the varied adolescent mesosystem negatively impacts psychosocial functioning. Specifically, abused adolescents are more likely to develop clinical depression due to weak social interactions and ineffective coping mechanisms (Oriol et al., 2017). Because these victims often grow a sense of worthlessness, their thinking patterns continually evolve to one of substantial doubt on their bodies or abilities. Eventually, feelings of negativity and incompetency persist, therefore contributing to clinical depression. According to Oriol et al.
