One of the recent health care policies to be passed in New Jersey is the New Jersey Easy Enrollment Health Insurance Program. Senators Teresa Ruiz and Nellie Pou, representing districts 29 and 35, sponsored the bill numbered S3238 (New Jersey Legislature, 2020).
The primary goal of the New Jersey Easy Enrollment Health Insurance Program is to increase the number of insured people in the state. The program requires that the Department of Banking and Insurance create provisions that permit the identification of the uninsured persons in New Jersey through an addition of a check box on the state income tax return to allow the residents to indicate whether they would want their eligibility for coverage evaluated and relevant information provided (New Jersey Legislature, 2020). Through the law, the state intends to maximize the enrollment of the individuals who qualify for the affordability assistance and minimum necessary cover to improve access to care and reduce the cost of insurance for the people residing in the state of New Jersey. The uninsured, who are the primary target in the passage of the policy, is required to provide information on whether they would like to be insured.
According to the senators who proposed the law, its passed is considered instrumental in aiding the uptake of health insurance by the youths, minorities, and people from low-income backgrounds. Implementing the policy is critical in improving the population’s health by addressing the cost and access to care. A segment of the population targeted with the policy is those with low incomes, which is a major factor limiting access to care (Artiga & Honton, 2018).
