Gender inequality is a common characteristic for many societies, with men on average better positioned than women. The goal of bridging the social gap between men and women has held a prominent position in national strategy statements and international organizations. Despite the progress made over recent decades, gender equality remains elusive even in advanced countries such as the U.S.
Women continue to receive lesser wages compared to their male counterparts in the United States. The number of women entering the workforce has rapidly increased since the turn of the twentieth century. However, despite the increased number of women working full-time jobs, pay gaps between men and women persists. According to Quffa (2016), women in the U.S. only get paid seventy-eight percent of what is paid to their male colleagues. Women should earn the same wages as their male counterparts occupying the same positions. Therefore, more needs to be done to cover the twenty-two percent wage gap between men and women.
