Unit 1-1
The sport chosen is football. The three different risks associated with the sport include concussions, musculoskeletal injuries, and ACL tears. Preventing concussions requires players to avoid head-to-head and foot-to-head collisions with other players. Moreover, footballers should wear protective equipment like padding, shin guards, and eye guards. The prevention of musculoskeletal injuries involves exercise-based programs that reduce the risk of dangerous physical contact. Trials before each game also help reduce musculoskeletal injuries since a player learns how to avoid perilous tackles. The prevention of ACL tears demands that players pay attention to movement, avoid training while fatigued, and exercise to improve and strengthen their hamstring and quadriceps. The above measures are effective since they strengthen muscles surrounding the joints like in the knees. Additionally, they focus on proper nerve control improving power, balance, and control. Through this risk management policy, the owners should plan, design, and organize strategies that reduce the hazard. The facility should be repaired regularly. Equipment needs to be replaced on a regular basis thus reducing the risks associated with a damaged field. The success of the risk also depends on the sports organizations cooperating with the players, staff, and field owners. More importantly, coaches and officials need constant training to uphold standards set by the relevant personnel. Overall, this is a good policy and recommended for implementation.
Unit 1-3
Different leagues like the NHL, NFL, MLS, NBA, and LPGA handle the issue of concussions and performance-enhancing drugs by investing in better-performing helmets and performing gear. The helmets and protective clothing undergo rigorous laboratory testing by experts including biochemical engineers to critically evaluate the viability of the gear. Additionally, the leagues like the NFL combine with the NFL Players Association to improve the condition of the gear. As for performance-enhancing drugs, the leagues perform drug testing for the use of narcotics. The leagues also formed a joint drug program to test players who have been suspended. The program announces stronger testing and harsher penalties for those found guilty. There was a recent scandal involving lawsuits after surprising PED tests from MLB players. Names exposed in this scandal include Herschel ‘Boog’ Powell, and according to the Players Association, the athletes claimed they did not know how the illegal substances entered their system (Rosenthal, 2020).
