Many successful organizations will remedy their success on the management strategies that they have managed to employ in the success of their business. 1 Executive Summary
The strategic management analysis of Johnson and Johnson Company is looking to analyze at the strategic performance of company in its micro and macro environment. J&J is one of the leading providers of healthy products and services in the world with roots in more than 151 countries. What makes this company grow and develop in such kind of speed is what is making the objectives of this study. Indeed the strategic management analysis will look at the respective decisions and strategies that have been employed by the management of J&J which has led to its speedy or slow growth. The external, internal environments of the company will be analyzed with a financial analysis. To evaluate and understand all these we shall look at the environmental analysis of the company by analyzing its prospective and actual environment by employing different models like SWOT analysis and Financial Ratios and Analysis. Then an analysis of the threats and opportunities available for J&J will be evaluated. Task two will involve identifying and analyzing the chain value and value network of J&J. Every organization’s success is based on the possibility of an efficient value chain and effective value network. At the end a SWOT analysis will be undertaken to realize the business market share situational analysis.
2 Scope of the Case Study
This study is to determine the progress and development of Johnson and Johnson by evaluating the respective managerial strategic decisions and project implementation. It will look to determine the business environment and process of business performance of the Johnson and Johnson. Considering the company’s success in global health products within its three major segments including the Consumer Products Medical Devices and Equipment and the Pharmaceutical segments. And there is much to be studied on its business, trade strategies and their effect to the political, economical, legal and technological environment.
1 Company Background
Johnson and Johnson is a global healthcare products and services provider that is much acclaimed in offering some of the best and common products and services in the globe. It’s mostly known for selling fresh and clean smell baby powders. The company is based in the state of New Jersey, United States of America in a town by the name New Brunswick. It’s a leading provider of healthy products and services with more than 147 facilities world wide encompassing up to 50 countries. The company was started in 1886 as a simple idea of creating clean plus sterile dressings and the making of medical plaster by three brothers, Robert, James and Edward Johnson. And by 1887 the company was incorporated. It has continued from then by initially offering baby care products until in 1921 when the company introduced the Band-Ai which allowed for self-application. With success of the Band-Aid in the United States, the company sought to go beyond borders and establishing a first foreign branch in the United Kingdom by the name of J&J Ltd. With that the company has grown to become one of the largest health care products and services provider in the world.
The Second World War become another time for the company to introduce new items that were necessary for the war. During the war, J&J was able to introduce the duct tape and other items that helped cement the position of the company during the war by being able to supply million of bandages and first aid kits. Within the end of the war the company created its Credo, a document that outlined the general and specific objectives and responsibilities to its stakeholders including doctors and patients, customers and employees and most importantly towards its shareholders. The company brides in a number of products currently including Tylenol and Avucue, LifeScan and Band-Aid, Zytec and Neutrogena, ortho and K.Y, birth control options and a number of medical technologies, diagnostic applications and devices with all the products have become generic names all over the world and cultures. In pharmaceuticals, the company is able to offer a wide range of prescription products for various diseases and the world’s most dangerous illnesses. Other products offered by J&J include cardiovascular treatment drugs, reproductive health advancement drugs and developments towards the treatment of both HIV and Cancer, both among the serious and untreatable illness in the world.
2 Vision and Mission Statements
The purpose of both the vision and mission statements is to guide a company in achieving its set objectives and strategies. J&J as a global health care products and services company thereby has translated its strong values and philosophy in creating a general vision that outlines its dreams and strength. The vision is as follows:
"To be able to maximize the global power of diversity and inclusion to achieve superior business results and sustainable advantageâ€
In every way the vision was the baseline in creating the mission. The company has presented the hows of achieving the indicated vision. The following are the ways in which the vision will be achieved:
* Be able to foster and promote Credo-based cultures which are able to embrace company differences while being able to drive innovation in order to accelerate workplace growth
* Ensuring that the company is able top achieve a skilled and high performance workforce which is to be reflected in the diverse global marketplace.
* Be able to work with business leaders in identifying plus establishing a target market opportunities suited for consumers all over the world.
* Be able to cultivate the external relationships between professional and civic groups and patients in supporting and prioritizing on business opportunities.
The company demands also the highest standards from their products and services and also the best from its employees plus the top executive officers and directors.
3 Strategies
The mission statement is incorporated within the following objectives and strategies:
* The first responsibility of the company is towards doctors and nurses, patients, mothers and fathers and any other person who use the company services. Thus in meeting the needs of these people there is need for high quality and constantly be able to reduce costs in an effort to achieve reasonable prices for products and services. At the same time customer orders should be serviced promptly and very accurately and suppliers or distributors should have an opportunity of making a fair profit.
* The company is responsible to the employees, men and women who tirelessly work all round the globe. Each person should be able to be considered an individual; thus respect must be accorded to their dignity and their merit should be fairly recognized. Every employee should be able to have security to the jobs with compensation being fair and adequate with the working conditions being clean and safe. Also the company should be mindful of helping the employees in achieving their family responsibilities. Employees are to be given an opportunity to voice their complaints and suggestion to the company and all will be given an equal opportunity in employment opportunities, their development advancement to those who are worthy and qualified. Competent management should be considered just and ethical at all time and means.
* Community responsibility- J&J is responsible to the communities where it lives and works and the global community. The company is a good citizen who engages in supporting good charity projects and works while at the same time pays its share of taxes.
