Compare and contrast “the walk” by Jose Donoso and “the tree” by Luisa Maria Bombal.
Introduction
The story of “the walk” by Jose Donoso talks of how Jose at his young age knew about his aunt’s disappearances. His aunt was called Matilde. Her disappearances worried the family members. Most of what is narrated by Jose Donoso is what he heard when he was a child by standing outside the library’s door and heard from his uncles discussing about aunt Matilde’s disappearance. Some sessions of the narration are guess work since Jose did not know much until the conclusion part of the story where he leaves the readers in suspense not knowing if aunt Matilde was found or not, or if she returned or not.
Another story is of “the tree” narrated by the author called Luisa Maria Bombal. She explains of events that might be happening by most people in the society. The story is of a young lady called Brigida who also looked innocent. In the story Maria uses a lot of imagery and personification with hidden meaning that the reader will have to think deeply on the meanings. Brigida follows the norms of marriage but at the end she becomes unhappy. The story ends by showing Brigida concluding that marriage is not a place of roses where you are fully happy but ends up unhappy.
