An electronic health record is the computerized legal gathering of the patient's data in a digital form. EHRs may include diverse clinical and personal information. Health organizations throughout the United States have changed from documents that are paper-based administration systems to electronic storage systems. The significance of electronic health records is that they ease sharing of the patient's information like medical charts, documents, tests results and medications across several healthcare environments. Despite the several benefits, electronic health record has disadvantages. This study examines the advantages and disadvantages of EHRs to the patients, nurses and the healthcare organization.
Advantages of electronic health records
Enhance office efficiency
Medical staff uses the electronic files to save time and better office efficiency, specifically by reducing the requests for lab results and prescription replenish phone calls. Nursing and clinic staff can also triage and handle electronic messages and are sent faster and are more efficient than telephone messages. A clinic administrator said that nurses receive the messages on their computers in places they are seated. They can easily view what the patient said and attempt to provide them an answer before they call back (Miller Jr. et al. 2016).
Improving information access and patient's satisfaction
The patients save time because they easily access their health data. Miller Jr. et al. note that a clinic staff member they interviewed revealed that depending on their situation or jobs it may be simpler for them to just log on faster and check the patient’s information than making a phone call (2016).
