Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Professor’s Name Course Date Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) is a hearing loss in which the sounds coming to the inner ear are received well, but there is a breakdown in transmitting the signals to the brain. This leads to problems in speech recognition and sound segregation, particularly with background noise. Unlike most other forms of HL, ANSD concerns the neural input and processing of sounds rather than their perception (Roush, 2020). This paper presents general information regarding ANSD, communication, and related interventions. Hearing Loss in ANSD Hearing loss varies in people with ANSD from mild to severe and, in some cases, profound. This loss configuration may also be different, and it may be unilateral, where it centers on one ear, and bilateral, where it concerns both ears. One particularity of ANSD is abnormal otoacoustic emissions, but normal OAEs suggest that outer hair cells in the cochlea are not impaired. Nevertheless, ABR is either variant or non-existent, indicating that the auditory signals do not proceed to the brain as they should (De Siati et al., 2020). Because of this, ANSD separates it from other types of hearing loss. Effects on Speech and Communication The most challenging area identified in ANSD is speech perception. Although people can perceive sounds, they may not be able to comprehend the words being said in a noisy environment. This is because the brain cannot interpret the sound signals appropriately received. For instance, certain sounds may come and go and appear delayed, which causes problems when talking. It can make it difficult for children to develop speech and language, as they cannot learn words clearly as they hear them (Roush, 2020). Self-adults with ANSD also understand speech with difficulty, which hampers their social and working experiences. Interventions for ANSD The treatment of ANSD depends on the client. Some people may need hearing aids that create sound at louder levels for them to hear because these help many individuals. Some people might benefit from cochlear implants, devices that could stimulate auditory nerves without going through some of the broken components of the ear. However, no diagnostic tests are available to determine which treatment will work best for a particular individual (De Siati et al., 2020). Frequency modulation (FM) systems, for instance, are used more often to amplify sound quality that may be challenging to hear due to loud noises for individuals with hearing difficulties. Speech and language are also crucial since they enable clients with hearing difficulties to master how they will communicate. As a result, in some situations, students use gestures, sign language, or cued speech as an auxiliary means of language acquisition.
