Administering pain relief medication throughout surgery to reduce pain compared to administering the same medicine after surgery: an essay The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) provided a definition of pain, where “Pain” was mentioned as an irksome, perceptible, as well as psychological sensation, which happens due to injury and trauma (Meissner et al., 2015). The process related to intake of pain-relieving medicines during surgery is known as preventive analgesia, that has important role in the field of pain physiology and management (Chou et al., 2016). This procedure has the potential in alleviation of post-surgical pain. Principle of this approach is to reduce pain sensitivity and perception, to give relief to the patient who underwent surgery. During surgery, iatrogenic injury causes inflammation inside the tissue, which ultimately brings about the symptoms of hyperalgesia and chronic pain (Chou et al., 2016). During surgical procedures, anaesthetists deliver pain-relieving medications to hinder pain pathway signals from reaching to central nervous system (CNS), that ultimately decreases the pain- sensitivity (Chou et al., 2016). After several research in the field of pain physiology related to surgery, it has been proved that patients, who received an un-interrupted supply of pain-relieving as well as opioid drugs, felt comparatively lesser amount of pain (Kolettas et al., 2015). Successful approaches to effective pain management have so many beneficial contributions like lesser retention time at the hospital, saving money as well as patient gratification. The potency of preventive analgesia can be determined by various factors such as complexity of the surgery, the nature of administered drugs, as well as the medical history of the patient (Kolettas et al., 2015). Anaesthetists should consider the ill effects of preventive analgesia too, that can cause several health issues in patients like “opioid- promoted hyperalgesia” or “paradoxical hyperalgesia” (Kolettas et al., 2015). At the end, it can be concluded that medicines used in preventive analgesia during surgery, represents a wholesome approach for controlling post-surgical pain, contrary to only post-surgical delivery of similar kind of medications. * Referenc...
