Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary (Lung) Disease Author Affiliation Instructor Course Date Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary (Lung) Disease Disease Details I want to discuss Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in this forum. It is not a single disease but a category of conditions, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, associated with blocking airflow and causing breathing-related issues (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, 2022a). In emphysema, the tiny air sacs at the airways ending are destroyed, while in chronic bronchitis, there is production phlegm due to inflamed airways (Hadjiliadis & Harron Jr., 2022). COPD affects about 16 million Americans (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, 2022a). Surprisingly, it affects millions, but they have not been diagnosed; hence they are yet to receive treatment for the same. Disease Process Lungs’ airways suffer from abnormalities, which limit the inflow and outflow of air from the lungs. Narrowing of airways can arise from several processes, including the destruction of lung parts such as air sacs, blockage of airways by mucus, inflammation, and swelling of the airway lining (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, 2022b). COPD manifests as coughing (with phlegm), wheezing, and breathing difficulties. Interestingly, even those who have asthma share these symptoms. Treatment and Management Although currently there is no known cure for COPD, it can be managed by adopting specific recommended approaches. After a positive diagnosis using a spirometry test, one can seek to address the causes of COPD, such as smoking (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, 2022b). Exercising regularly, getting a vaccination for pneumonia, influenza, and coronavirus, and taking inhaled medication can be integral in managing the condition, reducing flare-ups, and improving symptoms (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, 2022b). In addition, early diagnosis can be instrumental in inhibiting the progression of COPD and reducing flare-ups. Science and God’s Redemptive Work Science equips humans to participate in God’s redemptive work. Essentially, it is a God-giv...
