Diabetes is a chronic condition that impairs the way the body processes blood sugar, and it causes the pancreases to produce little or no insulin is a hormone that breaks down sugar in the blood to be used throughout the body (Bruckel J, 2014). Diabetes occurs in different types including type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, and how people manage the condition depends on the type of diabetes. Gestation diabetes occurs during pregnancy when a person becomes less sensitive to insulin (Damm, P et al, 2019).Reports from the center for Disease control and prevention (CDC), between 3-11% of pregnancies every year leads to gestational diabetes. People who may become pregnant while overweight, have a high risk of experiencing the condition (Johnson et al, 2014).
Signs and symptoms of diabetes
The signs and symptoms of diabetes can be so mild to an extent that they may become unnoticed and they may also vary depending on the type of diabetes. Early symptoms may include a higher level of glucose than normal in the blood. Glucose is a kind of sugar that is found in the blood.
The body converts food into glucose that is used for energy, however the cells requires insulin to absorb in glucose. When the body is unable to make enough insulin, the glucose will not be absorbed, and there will be no energy production leading to body fatigue and hunger.
Diabetes can also lead to blurred vision. The changes in the fluid level in the body can make the eye lenses to swell up, and as a result the eye lenses changes shape and lose focus. Dry mouth and itchy skin can also be caused by this condition. Diabetes makes the body to use a lot of fluids in peeing hence there is less moisture to be used for other things. A person becomes hydrated, dry mouth and itchy dry skin.
