The Epidemic Intelligence Service is considered a special post graduate training program that goes for two years. It is usually an on job training program for the professionals in the health field who are interested in advancing their knowledge in the sector of the applied epidemiology. It is a program that was developed and started in the year 1951 and up to now, over 3000 officers have been attracted to the course. These officers in the health field are concerned with the public health frontlines, research, conducting epidemiologic investigations and the public health surveillance that could either be international or national (cdc.gov).
The program is mainly concerned with the holders of PhDs in veterinary medicine, dentistry or medicine. However other individuals like the MPHs could also be absorbed into the system. It provides very competitive training that is geared towards the eradication of various ailments both in the classroom and on job basis.
