Introduction
According to Raheem et al., (2016), erectile dysfunction (ED) is a health challenge that affects 70 per cent of men who are above 70 years, 45 per cent of men whose age is in the 60s as well as 15 per cent of men whose age bracket is 40 to 50 years. Other than being a harbinger of coronary heart disease (CHD), ED is a distressing condition that shares common risk factors with cardiovascular diseases like smoking, insulin resistance, increased body mass (BMI) as well as lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Despite commonness and prevalence, including being a risk factor to CHD, most men with erectile dysfunction receive little treatment or no treatment at all. Although there is a strong association between coronary heart disease and erectile dysfunctions (ED) there are limited clear clinical procedures and framework policies that guide how patients with erectile dysfunctions with known coronary heart diseases can be evaluated. This paper discusses erectile dysfunction as a risk factor for coronary heart disease, effects of international, national and local policies on the care of people with a cardiac condition. The paper also explores the reasons why ED is under-treated and explains factors that drive under-treatment and non-adherence before outlining recommendations in the final section.
