Aging is associated with numerous medical problems that necessitated the search for frequent and specialized care. As a consequence, this leads to an increase in the healthcare cost which is also complicated by the economic changes that accompany aging such as retirement. The normal healthcare insurance is based on the assumption that the normal health care needs will not surpass the estimated costs and that the consumers will be able to pay the premiums to the third party for services. However, this is adversely affected by aging where the disease burden increases as the economic ability reduce (Blumenthal et al., 2013). This leads to the failure of the healthcare insurance system.
Medicare is a federal government initiative that focuses on the special groups whose need for healthcare services surpasses that of normal people. The initiative focuses on the elderly (above 65 years) and the disabled regardless of their income. Medicaid, on the other hand, refers to the initiative that brings together the federal and state agencies to support the low-income earners acquire an affordable healthcare insurance (Blumenthal et al., 2013).
