Nursing informatics involves identifying, managing, tracking, and sending information by integrating analytics and sciences of medicine. It is utilized by physicians, nurses, patients, as well as other professionals in the healthcare sector to enter, obtain, and share care protocols, nursing notes, diagnostic test results, financial reports, patient histories, and evidence-based research (McCormick & Saba, 2015). Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) are two systems that have evolved from nursing informatics. Despite nursing informatics having a positive impact in the healthcare sector, there are ethical and illegal issues surrounding that may arise in various facilities (Sipes & Hardy, 2019).
One legislative issue example is where a healthcare professional fails to shred printouts containing a patient’s private information. The information gets leaked to people who are not authorized to view the information. That arises as a legal issue, and the patient whose information has been leaked may sue the worker or the facility. Even though the person may not have exposed the printouts intentionally, it can be treated as an act of negligence. He or she might be imprisoned, fined, or cause the facility to face legal charges. Apart from that, a facility might lose its credibility in the public eye.
