Group Work: Getting to Know Each Other and Setting Goals (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Assignment Group Project in Groups of 5 members
In class (session 5), we will play a team and leadership simulation (in teams of 5 members) that require your collaboration. It is essential that all team members are attending the session and have a good internet connection during the day.
You’ll be working in groups of five for this assignment. You will reflect upon your performance during the team simulation and how you have worked together as a team, what was effective, and what would need improvement for future teamwork endeavours. Your reflective team report needs to address the following three parts:
PART I:
Provide a short introduction to the simulation played. This short introduction should cover the following elements:
• The purpose of the simulation.
• The team’s objective.
• The different roles played by each individual team member.
• Your team’s performance (did you achieve the team and individual goals?).
Part I counts 15% of the final mark of the assignment.
Word count Part I: 700 words
Part II:
In the second part of the assignment, you are asked to critically analyse and reflect upon your experiences during the simulation and connect your analysis, reflections, and learnings to the concepts and theories discussed in class. Depending on how well you have completed the short surveys during the simulation, your team may also draw on the survey responses that we will provide to you shortly after the simulation. Please consider the following themes when writing your analytical and reflective report:
• Challenges: What were the main challenges of achieving high-quality teamwork during the simulation?
• Team performance: Why did your team perform (not) effectively? What went well; what did not go well?
• Role of the team leader: What are the responsibilities of the team leader in the simulation? How could have the leader helped to facilitate teamwork in this simulation?
• Knowledge integration: How well did you integrate the knowledge and expertise of each team member?
• Goal setting and goal achievement: How did you manage the challenge of conflicting goals?
• Lessons learned: what lessons did you learn from this simulation? What would you do differently if you were to play this simulation again?
Part II counts 70% of the final mark of the assignment.
Part III:
As a team, briefly explain how you would use the learnings from the simulation at your workplace in the future. Please outline three key recommendations on how you can use the learnings from the simulation to help you develop into a better colleague and leader in your future work roles.
Part III counts 15% of the final mark of the assignment.
Word count Part III: 500 words

Getting to Know Each Other and Setting Goals
As noted, the members lacked dedication and established goals and the tools to fulfill them. Consequently, everyone tackled the project in whatever way they thought was appropriate, with no clear aims or regard for others. Based on research conducted by Shuffler et al., (2018), building good rapport and having set objectives improves teamwork. Collaboration enables the members to distribute labor among individuals, each with their goals.
