The three paradigms of healthcare policy and laws depict the evolution phases of health care in America over time. The evolution of healthcare policies and laws has influenced the efficiency and competence of healthcare systems experienced today. These models exists base on economic, political, and social views governing a region or a system at a particular era (Parmet, 2003). They explain the policy, financial, and legal procedures that dominated each era hence each paradigm is characterized by unique legal, political, and financial outcomes. These perspectives include Professional Autonomy Perspective, Social contract, and Free market Perspective.
Professional Autonomy Perspective
This policy has dominated the healthcare market for the longest time in history. It is the basis in which all other models are based. It contends on the perspective that medical practitioners and physicians should adapt their scientific knowledge and expertise to control and regulate the healthcare market (Washington college of Law). The model allows physician and medical practitioners to have legal authority over medical matters. This authority or ability to translate medical knowledge and expertise to legal authority influence the quality and nature of healthcare delivered to the society. It would inappropriate to set up a healthcare using this model since in has no strategic means of controlling prices. The model also discourages competition hence poor service delivery as well as absence of professionalism in healthcare system
Social Contract model
This perspective aims on the notion that allowing physicians to total control of the healthcare system, in aspects of finances and legal matters, poses great risks to the public. The model focuses on the intervention of public policy and law. The public policy and law enforces and ensures a social contract is made. Law and policy makers come up with laws that regulate all stake holders in the healthcare system. This also means incorporating physicians and medical practitioner in the running of the healthcare system. However, the model also has policies that limit competition and consumer empowerment hence the quality of medical services offered is not standardized.
Free market Perspective
This model is considered as the ideal healthcare model. It is the model in operation today. It is grounded on the belief that healthcare insurance markets as well as that of healthcare services perfom better in a deregulated market environment (Amaringe, 2008). Free market perspective empowers consumers and encourages a healthy competition in the healthcare system. This system enables provision of quality and efficient healthcare to individuals at reasonable prices.
My preferred healthcare policy
Based on the three models, the free market perspective model is ideal and beneficial for my region. I would utilize the market completion model in opening the ambulatory centre. It is an ideal model for running a healthcare system in the modern world. I feel encouraged by the legality of providing healthcare services to patients according to their interests and decisions. This is because medical corporations make sure that medical services are offered in favor of patient interests.
The presence of competition in the medical field attracts my interest in basing healthcare centre under this paradigm. Competition would facilitate quality healthcare provision as well as encourage high standards and culture of professionalism. These factors would be absent and ignored incase of a self regulatory healthcare system. Professional autonomy encourages incompetent physicians as well as poor service delivery. The model also allows physicians to open health care facilities anywhere and provide quality services.
Advantages of a free market perspective
The free market perspective allows individuals to choose on the health care services they require as well as choose on the health care insurance plan that suits their financial status. It also empowers healthcare beneficiaries to oversee and ensure that the services they receive suit their financial status. This enables individual to pay for healthcare services and cove...
