NURSING CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT Name of Student Institution affiliation Nursing curriculum development Introduction The setting of choice is an acute care facility. The setting is paramount to both the physicians and the nurses taking care of critically ill patients. The hospital set up, offers a variety of service to patients. They also deal with the admission of ill individuals to the facility. Another paramount role of this setting is to reduce hospital acquired infection. It also aims at observing as well as instilling cultural competence to its practitioners.my selected topic is sexually transmitted infections in young adults. The setting will provide an opportunity to address this issue in details. Also, it will allow the formulation of a curriculum for nursing students. Acute care facility It is a setup that majors on issues related to severe cases. The cases present as being lethal to the patients (Ye et al., 2012). They also require quality care to ensure that they get well, or their suffering is alleviated. One of the conditions that acute care facilities deal with is sexually transmitted infections especially in young adults. Most STI'S cause dreadful reactions in patients. These responses make it hard for the patients to perform their activities of daily living. This factor makes them require care from acute care facilities. Readmission rates According to Al-Amin (2016), sexually transmitted infections are infections that can recur once a patient defaults from taking the prescribed drugs. In cases where patients are admitted to an acute care facility, they undergo preferential treatment. The treatment focuses on curbing the identified infection and other presenting symptoms. It is not a wonder; some patients receive quality treatment from these facilities. After the physicians certify them as eligible for discharge, they rejoice and undergo counseling. Nurses in particular, showers them with health education on matters regarding drug compliance.it is usually funny how patients receive counseling on drug adherence and In about two weeks, they undergo readmission. The rates of readmission especially in patients with sexually transmitted infections are very high. Issues related to drug compliance makes the patients experience readmissions. In most cases, patients develop drug resistance to the diseases/bacteria in their systems. The resultant resistance makes their immune systems weak. The weakened immune systems predispose these patients to the same bacteria that attacked them leading to the recurrence of the infection. The incidence of recurrence of sexually transmitted diseases might lead to patient readmission. Reduction of hospital-acquired infections In acute care facilities, a high rate of patient segregation takes place. Patients with highly contagious diseases like hepatitis A and B undergo separation. They receive special treatment, where they have the opportunity to receive specialized treatment so as to prevent the spread of their diseases to other patients (Kuehn, 2012). Through the employment of a strategy of patient segregation according to the type of infection, hospital-acquired infections are usually reduced. Cultural competence Physicians who work in acute care facilities take ample consideration on matters regarding cultural aspects of patients. Marrone & Tang (2010) suggests that, the cultural aspects may range from cultural beliefs to practices. Through a thorough history taking, the physicians determine the dos and don'ts of their patients. Through this, they can acquire cultural competence in their work setting. Educational framework The school of thought that can be employed in the development of a curriculum is the essentialist theory. The theory refers to "traditional" or "Back to the Basics”. It is named so because it tries to impart learners with essentials of academic character and knowledge development. The term essentialist was introduced in the 1930s by William Bagley who was an American educator. The philosophy might help in the inclusion of fundamental aspects of care to the curriculum. For instance, the basics of treating sexually transmitted infections might be incorporated in the nurses' curriculum. This might be included so as to ensure that nurses possess the necessary knowledge on the management of patients with sexually transmitted infections. Essentialist's theorists suggest that all traditional disciplines such as math, natural science, history, foreign language, and literature be taught to students. They emphasize the importance of inclusion of these subjects in the curriculum. Another philosophy that can be used in curriculum development is the existentialist theory. The first principle of existentialism was put across by Jean Paul Sartre. The stated that man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. The second philosophy was invented by A.S.Neill. He said that childhood is not adulthood, and no child ever gets enough play. Neil came up with the summer hill theory. On matters related to education, the philosophy is based on an intellectual attitude.it was born in the nineteenth century in Europe.it is associated with great thinkers like Soren Kierkegaard. The theory suggests that there exists no inborn or universal human nature. The existential philosophy depicts subject matter as one that takes second place on issues concerning students. It helps students appreciate and understand themselves as unique individuals.
