Healthy People 2020 Policy for the Elderly
Introduction
The elderly in society have various challenges and, as such, should receive professional care regarding their health situations. The care for the elderly would mean the stakeholder, caregivers, and the government collaborates to get the specialized needs for the aged and develop the solution for the elderly. As such, the government is responsible for developing policies that would be useful in taking care of their needs (Laura Ann Clark MS, 2017). Additionally, some organizations commit to taking care of the elderly. This paper will evaluate the policy framework for the elderly in Healthy People 2020 and describe an organization that takes care of the elderly. Further, the research will provide a review of scholarly articles reading the Healthy People 2020 policy framework, which is important to the organization. Finally, the research will make recommendations that would possibly have a positive impact on elderly persons within society.
Current Policy Issue
The Healthy People 2020 policy has a provision on taking care of the elderly population within the United States. The objective of the policy is to improve the health of older adults and provide offer services that would improve the quality of life of the elderly. Healthy People 2020 identifies health issues affecting the old, including chronic conditions like Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, injuries, diabetes, and cancer (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2014). The Federal government works hand in hand with the existing organization to provide the necessary resources assisting in taking care of older adults with chronic diseases. Healthy People 2020 is one of the leading policy frameworks in the United States that is useful in taking care of the needs of the elderly in the United States.
Organization Impacted by the Healthy People 2020 policy
The policy framework is developed by the federal government and works effectively when implemented through the organizations responsible for taking care of the elderly. The Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) has massively been affected by the implementation of the Healthy People 2020 policy. CDC has a mission to protect Americans from health, safety, and security threats both within the country and in foreign lands. The organization plays the role of supporting communities and citizens in preventing attacks irrespective of the nature of the disease (Murray et al., 2018). As such, the organization increases the health of the country. CDC works through science to provide health information in a bid to protect the country against health attacks and become responsive when there is a need.
The CDC has effectively benefited from the Healthy People 2020 policy in meeting its objectives. The CDC has developed the Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) initiative. The Federal government has channeled resources, tools, and educational needs that has assisted the organization in lowering the risk for the elders in getting injuries through falls. The United States admits more than 3 million elderly populations in the country to the emergency room on cases of falling and injuries annually (Rosberg & Dahlin, 2018). The STEADI has integrated the recommendations of the Healthy People 2020 people in assisting them in screening, assessing, and intervening in ways or lowering the risks for the elderly. The resources offered to the CDC as part of the government achieving the Healthy People 2020 mission have been useful in assessing the patients, testing, and employing caregivers, which subsequently has led to an improvement in the ways through which patients get care.
Overview of Research studies
Recent studies have discussed the role of the Healthy People 2020 policy on the elderly population in the United States. Llorente & Valverde (2019) sought through the Heathy People 2020 and identified the main challenge of the elderly to include mental health issues. The research identifies that the elderly have a high level of prevalence of mental health issues. The cultural issues in the United States affect the perception of caregivers, which lead to disparity in terms of the medical care the elderly are getting in the pollution. The research identifies the full implementation of the Healthy People 2020 policy as a significant tool in bridging the disparity in taking care of the mental health issues among the elderly.
Some reports also show the progress the Healthy People 2020 is making in taking care of the healthcare needs of the elderly population. The Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on Leading Health Indicators for Healthy People 2020 (n.d) offers a report showing significant issues the Healthy People 2020 policy implementation has brought out in the field of implementation. The quality of care for the elderly would improve massively when the number of people accessing health insurance increases in the country. Additionally, the government should expand the number of people with primary care among older adults. The country would also achieve the objectives of Healthy People 2020 when there is appropriate and evidence-based clinical care among the elderly. The implementation of the recommendations of the report would be useful in improving the level of care among the elderly to improve on the quality of their lives.
Recommendation to Impact on the Older Adults
The Healthy People 2020 policy identifies the man challenges that affect the elderly in the population. The chronic illnesses which lower the quality of life of the older population have contributed significantly to the death of the older population. Additionally, the injuries have also affected the elderly leading to high rates of admission into the emergency rooms across the country for the aged population. An insufficient number of caregivers for the increasingly aging population is equally becoming a challenge for the older population.
To help improve in such conditions, the following research makes recommendations that would positively affect the needs of the aged population. The elderly should be assisted in carrying out the exercise
