Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E are the five most common strains of the virus. When considering the likelihood of disease and epidemic outbreaks, these are the most concerning. Specifically, the B and C types are the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer, and they are responsible for chronic illness in hundreds of millions of people. Consumption of contaminated food or water is the primary cause of hepatitis A and E. Hepatitis B can be transmitted through the placenta, within close families, or through sexual activity, and the other viruses are typically spread through contact with infected blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures involving contaminated equipment, or through close personal relationships.
Acute infections may manifest in a variety of ways, such as jaundice (skin and eye yellowing), dark urine, excessive exhaustion, nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort. The number of people in the United States with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is estimated to be between 0.8 and 1.4 million, whereas the number of people with chronic hepatitis C virus infection is believed to be between 2.7 and 3.9 million. Even medical and social workers don't fully grasp the complexity of these problems. Lack of knowledge about the prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis in the United States, as well as the proper methods and target populations for screening and medical management of chronic hepatitis B and C, is likely linked to the continuation of transmission, missed opportunities for prevention including vaccination, and poor health outcomes in people who are infected.
