Introduction The subject of this dissertation is to examine the reason for the lack of knowledge by Certified Nurse Assistant (CNAs) regarding interpersonal relations and how this lack of knowledge results in negative patient outcomes. It will majorly focus on the quality of Resident/Certified Nursing Assistant relationships as part of care giving this is because the Certified Nurse Assistants typically provide most of the direct care to residents; their ability to provide quality interpersonal care is regarded as an important determinant of resident outcomes. I am interested to know what effect the lack of knowledge by the CNAs regarding interpersonal relationships has on the residents. This is a continuous issue and is a problem in most of the nursing institutions. I am also set to discover ways through which the nurses can be trained on interpersonal relationship to enhance their interaction with the residents. The study draws upon experiences in my professional career and my experience as a volunteer in one of the nursing facilities in California. It focuses on a topical issue and I hope that the findings will be of much help to Certified Nurse Assistants who want to improve their knowledge regarding interpersonal relationship with the residents. I developed the interest in CNA’s interpersonal relationship during my internship at a nursing institution. It came to my notice that some of the residents recovered quickly and got discharged because of the way the nurses shared no interpersonal relationship with them. A particular interest is the effect or consequences of lack of knowledge by the CNAs regarding interpersonal relationship. While some residents show positive changes when there is lack of interpersonal relationship between them and the nurses some show opposite outcomes. Background of the project Certified Nurse Assistants have the sole responsibility of taking care of the residents in a nursing institution. The patients’ recovery depends on their relationship with the nurses, some respond positively to good interpersonal relationship while some respond negatively. Good relationship that assures the patients of their worthiness should be the most important and core aspect of nursing home care. To promote the meaning of worthiness, the nurses should listen to the patients, communicate, and treat them with respect, by using empathetic understanding and acknowledging them as people who should be taken seriously and attended to. Some measures should be taken to improve the interpersonal relationship between the nurses and the residents. For a good relationship to develop in a nursing home a rapport between the individual may be necessary, this shows that the two are compatible and has share a lot in common. There are several factors to consider when one needs to develop a relationship. Respect is the most important factor since it is the first time the two are meeting and unfamiliar with each other’s background. Time can also determine the development of interpersonal relationship, with time the parties involved get used to one another and understand one another hence building of trust between the two. Project Statement This project will find out the reason to lack of knowledge by the Certified Nurse Assistant in regard to interpersonal relationship between them and the residents. This has affected the relationship between the two thus influencing the residents’ reaction to treatment. While the literature indicates that there is lack of knowledge among the CNAs on interpersonal relationship, it is not known in California how it affects their relationship with the residents and to what extent this effect has reached. It needs to find out why the Certified Nurse Assistants lack knowledge on Interpersonal relationship, and how this affect the residents. It also needs to find out the solution to the problem in hand. This problem affects the residents’ recovery and the CANs delivery. Whatever affects the residents may also distress their families. Through the study, the community will be made aware of the existing problem. The project will propose ways through which the CNAs can receive training to enhance their knowledge on interpersonal relationships. Other ways of improving this correlation will also be suggested. The residents will also learn about their role in establishment of interpersonal relationship between them and the nurses. Purpose of the Project The purpose of this qualitative project is to develop a case report to apply to examining the reasons for lack of knowledge by Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) regarding interpersonal relationship. At this stage in the project, the level of knowledge characteristics of interpersonal relations is the independent variable. Data will be collected by using one of the standard instruments that measure the Certified Nurse Assistants relationship by conducting a pre-test, then educating them on Palau’s and Watson’s theory, lastly CNAs will complete a post test. An evaluation of the RAC scale will be conducted by evaluating a pre and post RAC scale completed by evaluating a pre and post RAC scale completed by CNAs. The evaluation of the post-test is expected to show an increase in relational communication by the CNAs resulting in positive outcomes. Clinical Questions P-Certified Nurse Assistants who are unaware of the interpersonal relationship caring theory may be the cause of negative outcomes for patients. I -is educational training on interpersonal relationship-C pretest and post- test reveal O-increase in knowledge of interpersonal relationship resulting in patients’ positive outcomes? The following questions will guide this qualitative study: Q 1.In CNAs, who are unaware of the interpersonal relationship caring theory, could this be the cause of negative patient outcome? Q2.Will the educational training improve their knowledge of interpersonal relationship? Q3. Will the increase in knowledge of interpersonal relationship result in positive patient outcome? Lack of knowledge in regard to is interpersonal relationship by Certified Nurse Assistants is considered the main reason for the negative outcomes in residents. The best solution to this problem is by taking these nurses for educational training to enhance their knowledge on this. Through training, they will gain skills which will help them improve their interpersonal relationship hence positive patient results. Advancing Scientific knowledge Certified Nurse Assistants spend a lot of time with the residents in nursing institutions; this is because they are the ones who play the biggest role in taking care of these clients. There must be interpersonal relationship between the two for peaceful co-existence but this is not so according to the prior studies taken. Research has it that most nurses lack knowledge on this thus resulting to negative patient outcome. According to Hildegard E. Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relation, he declared that the act of nursing is therapeutic because it is a healing art- assisting those who are in need of health care, Peplau(2016).It is impossible for a nurse who lacks knowledge to deliver effectively thus instead of helping the clients on the road to recovery, she does the opposite hence slow recovery by the client. Knowledge on interpersonal relationship is essential in this setup. Significance of the project The findings of this study will be of benefit to the society as a whole considering that nurses are needed everywhere and people interact with them all the time. The important role of nurses in the society justifies the need for them to improve in interpersonal relationship between them and the residents. Thus nurses who will apply the recommended approach derived from the outcome of this study will be able to take care of the residents well. The study will also help the residents identify their roles on the road to recovery. The institution administrators will be guided on how to help the nurses gain knowledge in .For me the study will help me uncover critical areas in the nursing process that many researchers were not able to explore. Thus a new theory of interpersonal relationship may be arrived at. Rationale for methodology This study will take the form of a qualitative research study. The purpose of this study is to examine the reason for lack of knowledge by the Certified Nurse Assistants in regards to interpersonal relationship and how this lack of knowledge results in negative patient outcome. This study will examine why the CNAs lack knowledge regarding interpersonal relationship by investigating their interaction with the residents. I will use a non-probability sample in the form of a purposive sample. For the purpose of this study characteristics are a participant who is a Certified Nurse Assistants and lack knowledge regarding interpersonal relationships. Data will be gathered through means of the standard instruments that measure the CNAs relationship by conducting a pre-test, then educating them on Paplau’s and Watson’s theory, they will then complete a post test .An evaluation of the relational communication scale will be conducted by assessing a pre and a post RAC scale completed by the Certified Nurse Assistants. The evaluation of the post- test is expected to show an increase in relational communication by the CNAs and the patient, resulting in positive outcomes.
