Microbes: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and the Agents for Microbial Control (Essay Sample)
This essay is about microbes, with a focus on the resident microbiota in the human body and the pathogenic bacteria S. aureus. It discusses the importance of resident microbiota in various sites of the body and their roles in digestion, vitamin generation, immune system maturation, and preventing germ transfer. The essay then explores the invasion and infection process of S. aureus, including its entry through different portals, use of virulence factors, adhesion to host cells, and formation of biofilms. It explains the clinical stages of S. aureus infection and the various diseases it can cause, such as skin and soft tissue infections, sepsis, endocarditis, and pneumonia. Diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of S. aureus infections are also discussed, including laboratory tests, identification methods, antibiotic resistance, and control measures.
The second part of the essay focuses on agents for microbial control, including physical and chemical methods. Physical methods such as heat, radiation, filtration, and mechanical removal are discussed in their effectiveness against S. aureus. Chemical methods, including disinfectants and antiseptics, are explained, along with their potential side effects and proper usage. The essay then delves into the mode of action of antimicrobial drugs and provides examples of drugs that target different aspects of microbial physiology. The importance of selecting appropriate antimicrobial drugs based on the nature of the infection, pathogen susceptibility, patient factors, and testing methods is emphasized.
generally, this essay covers the topics of resident microbiota, S. aureus infection, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and microbial control methods, providing a comprehensive overview of the subject matter.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)
Microbes are ubiquitous and colonize the human body at various sites, thus the resident microbiota. Resident microbiota is important to humans since they help in digestion, vitamin generation, immune system maturation, and germ transfer prevention. However, Pathogenic bacteria can also infect humans. Resident microbiota is evident in two sites: Bacteroides fragilis and Eubacterium rectale colonize the intestine, and Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes colonize the skin. For this study, the selected pathogen is S. aureus which can be part of the normal microbiota of the skin, nose, and throat. However, it can also cause infections ranging from mild skin illnesses such as pimples and boils to more serious infections such as pneumonia and sepsis.
Pathogen Invasion
S. aureus enters the body through various portals of entry, such as skin and intravascular devices like catheters and inhalation. Once inside the body, S. aureus uses its virulence factors (including enzymes, proteases, exfoliative toxins, and immune-modulatory factors) to help establish an infection, such as its ability to adhere to host cells and form biofilms (Tam & Torres, 2019).
