The approach a nurse manager uses to lead his or her staff is imperative because it affects the employees’ morale and productivity, as well as the quality of healthcare. There are many leadership styles that nurse managers can adopt in leading their staff ranging from the worse spoken authoritarian leadership to democratic leadership. While some leaders chose to be authoritative, other put the interest and the needs of their workers above everything else. More still, some leaders use a combination of two or more leadership approaches to come up with a formidable leadership that is all inclusive. Different nurse leaders will use different ways to handle various nursing issues, and more specifically, continuous health care quality.
One of the standard nursing leadership styles, democratic leadership, involves the incorporation of the subordinate staff in the decision-making process and goal-setting through soliciting their ideas and feedback or through holding consultative meetings and group discussions. A democratic nurse leader would address the issue of continuous quality improvement by consulting their junior staff about their thoughts on the issue and then go ahead to use the knowledge and the opinions they have from their training, research, and seminars, as stated by Sullivan and Garland (2010). From the latter statement, it is noticeable that the democratic nurse leaders still has the final say on an issue. The leader would purposefully give his subordinate personal and professional development time and allow the staff to have some level of autonomy in whatever they do. Valentine (2008) indicated that this kind of leaders will give emphasis to the nurses to suggest their contributions on how they feel the quality of healthcare should be improved and then motivate the employees to take the initiative in giving their best concerning the improvement of healthcare quality.
Equally, the affiliative nurse leader’s style would be to emphasize on the welfare of his employees and ensure that the team members have the best job satisfaction they can get from the company. As a consequence, Valentine (2008) believed that the leader would approach the issue of continuous improvement in the healthcare quality by striving to put essentials that are responsible for boosting the wellbeing and the job satisfaction of the team members. In their thinking, affiliative nurse leaders hope that workers who are well-attended to, regarding welfare and job satisfaction, work the best. Apparently, such leaders spend much money in trying to foster social cohesion among the team members. Also, according to Sullivan and Garland (2010), the affiliative nurse manager will tend to deal with the issue of quality management in the organization so expediently that no employee gets angry or upset. Although affiliative nurse leaders are quite slack in taking a stance in the decision-making process, they try to push for timely completion of work. Except for its inhibition of the leader’s authority and interference with the leader’s ability to be decisive, this style of leadership is critical in boosting the morale of employees and restoring the mood of frustrated team members. Sadly, the chances are high that the absence of robust and decisive leadership can hurt productivity and efficiency.
According to Huber (2013), transformational nurse leaders encourage nurses to participate in the hospital policy making process, stresses the importance of self-esteem, and boosts the spirit of teamwork by encouraging personal and professional development. The leader will use his charisma to explain to nurses the said quality health care issue for them to understand the issue and persuade them to take action for its correction.
