Most people take disability as another person’s problem. They fail to understand that disability touches their lives either directly or indirectly (Dan, 2005). People also fail to give much thought regarding the experiences faced by persons living with disability. The society has confined persons with disabilities in big institutions for many years. Other disabled persons are excluded from sports, businesses, homes, community groups, and schools. This paper will discuss one aspect of indigenous culture or knowledge ignored by mainstream about persons with disabilities.
The mainstream ignores the fact that persons with disabilities possess skills and abilities just like normal people. The chance for significant employment is crucial to a person’s financial security, psychological and physical health, and personal safety (Madeline, 2013). Unfortunately, the society has prevented people with disability from accessing significant employment regardless of whether they possess the necessary knowledge. According to Dan (2005), misconceptions and negative feelings towards peaople with disabilities prevent employers, such as corporate, government, and non-government institutions from tapping knowledge held by these people. Some employers are unwilling to hire an individual with a disability because of misconceptions regarding adaptive technology and modification costs. Mentally ill people face increased stigmatization since the society views them as a threat to mainstream individuals.
Persons with disabilities, as indicated by Madeline (2013), report frustration of relying on the government to support them devoid possessing the willingness and capacity to work. They understand the elevated living cost linked to disability. They also know the burden they present to their friends, caregivers, and family members either through finances or fear. Every person is entitled to live a life full of joy. However, persons with disability do not have such luxury because people perceive them as weak. They understand that education is the key for them secure better jobs in future. Health people ignore the fact that persons living with disability require adequate education to support themselves and their families.
