In response to the changes in the field of healthcare, nurses are charged with the task of staying well informed on the evolving aspects that are associated with patient care. Therefore, engaging in advance education is a strategy for positioning one’s self to attain the above goals and may also in turn lead to new opportunities. This assignment is aimed at highlighting the reasons I decided to join graduate school and pursue my area of specialization. This assignment also explains how earning the MSN degree will influence my career and my growth as a scholar. It also provides a reflection of how this MSN degree will support my professional goals and how this development plan will promote the achievement of my goals.
Why Enroll in Graduate School
Nurses require continuous education to ensure competence in their performance and positively respond to the technological changes and advances in medicine that are rapidly occurring today in order to prevent obsolescence (Huston, 2013). Therefore, to increase my knowledge and ensure that I remain up to date with the rapid changes that are today occurring in the nursing field I decided to join graduate school to develop my career further.
What Informed the Decision to Pursue an MSN in Adult/Geron Nurse Practitioner?
As an Adult/Geron Nurse Practitioner, I am involved in treating acutely ill patients especially adults. However, as a BSN my practice is limited due to the limited knowledge I possess I cannot become a nurse leader and transform the future of nursing practice (Leik, 2013). Pursuing an MSN will provide me with a foundation in theory and practical that will enable me to expand my practice scope and become a nurse leader in advance practice. In addition, the MSN will prepare me to provide leadership and mould the future of healthcare practice across adult age continuum and encompass the care and management of the patients (Leik, 2013).
How the Degree Will Influence My Career
By acquiring the MSN degree, I will be prepared educationally and clinically to care for all adults including making diagnosis, treating and managing adults that have acute and chronic conditions. In addition, I will be able to engage in clinical decision making and be eligible to become fully certified in the field through accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Moreover, I will be able to become part of the nursing education and administrative team.
