Stroke Prevention for Young Adults
A stroke is a medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing the brain tissues from getting sufficient oxygen. The primary causes of reduced blood supply to the brain are a blocked artery resulting in ischemic stroke or a ruptured artery resulting in hemorrhagic stroke. The clinical manifestations of stroke include headache, trouble walking, paralysis of body parts such as the face, legs, and arms, and difficulty speaking or understanding what others are saying. A stroke can result in brain damage, long-term disability, or even death. Although stroke is more common in older adults, the condition can also affect young adults. Identifying the common causes of stroke among young adults and the main groups affected is essential so that effective prevention strategies can be implemented.
Discussion
Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity globally, especially in the United States. The disease has often been known to affect middle-aged and older adults. However, the emerging trends show that young adults are now affected by the condition. The most common type of stroke among young adults is ischemic stroke. In research conducted in Cincinnati and Kentucky, 65% of all strokes diagnosed among young adults were ischemic, while 17% were hemorrhagic (Yahya. et al., 2020). Another research conducted by NIS shows that hospitalization of patients aged 18-44 diagnosed with ischemic stroke doubled between 2003 and 2012. However, hospitalization rates in hemorrhagic stroke have remained constant over time.
