Floss is a thread that is used to clean hard-to-reach places such as between teeth and under braces. In the early days, floss was made from silk until Dr. Charles C. Bass came up with idea of using nylon as the base material. Nylon was stronger and less susceptible to tears when working between teeth. Lately, owing to pressure from environmental groups, scientists have developed floss from a degradable material. Occasionally, the surface of floss is covered in different materials to suit various purposes. Some are covered in wax to aid in their movement between teeth, while others are covered in fluoride to prevent the occurrence of plaque. There is also floss covered in mint to give a fresh feeling to the user. Regular floss also comes also comes in different shapes to suit different uses. The most common type of floss comes in round shape and without wax. Then there is the type with a flattened surface in order to increase the contact area between on the teeth. Ultra floss is made of a spongy soft material CITATION Pat12 \l 1033 (Patterson Dental Supplies, 2012). Super floss, on its part, is an improved type of floss meant to cater to people with braces, bridges and wide gaps. The middle part of the super floss is covered with a spongy material while the ends are stiffened-end threads.
The use of floss is not complicated and can be done by most persons, except children, by the bathroom mirror. There are also gadgets (holders) that help hold floss in place while in use. They come in the ‘knife’ or ‘Y’ shapes and can be either reusable or disposable.
