INTRODUCTION.
End of life care is the services given to support those patients who are in their last moments of life (Efstathiou & Walker 2014). It is based on the understanding that death is natural and inevitable. This is the service given to people who because of illness or old age have few days to live. This care is given to ensure that these patients live comfortably as possible until they pass away. The people who are tending to the end of life are entitled to quality care so beyond words respect (Reed et al 2015). This care begins when a patient feel they have few days to live. Although it is not possible to predict when an individual may die, people are perceived to be approaching the end of life when they thought to be dying within a period of one year. End of life care include the palliative care. This is care that is directed to a man when they are experiencing the ailments that are hopeless (Higginson et al 2002). The paper seeks to address the requirement for end of life care in acute areas and the challenges faced by patients and nurses in delivering the care.
REQUIREMENT FOR END OF LIFE CARE IN ACUTE AREAS
Acute care nursing is a specialty. Patients admitted in the acute care hospitals give complex restorative issue. According to Reed et al (2015) the dying stage of an individual is equally of significance to their family members and friends. The end of life care is given to the patients or rather people at this stage so as to enable them remain comfortable even in their last life moments. This care is also given to the aged to support them spiritually and even psychologically. To ensure that this is sustained, there has to be good communication between the nurses and the family of the patient in addressing the case of the patient. This enables the support of the individuality of the patient. The end of life care in acute areas is administered so as to help curb the under in patients:
Pain
Pain is never altered by age. The elderly patients always experience pain. They do not communicate their pain because of the perception that old age brings pain in the life on individual. The decline in hepatic function exposes the “end of life” patients to the side effects of medication that is administered to them (Marck et al 2014). In addition then dying patients must be carefully assed because pain remains a notable cause of suicide. The care under the acute areas is thus give to reduce the pain.
Coping
Patient suffering from severe diseases continue to cope with the disease and pain in their daily lives. There are some patient who eve in their end of life remain optimistic while other fail to cope. They may show optimism just to keep the life spirit alive though they are coping with pain that the disease pose onto them. Those patients who cannot cope have always opted for suicidal instances to end their suffering. The care thus help in comforting the patient.
Dignity
For dying patients, dignity is lost because they are seen as unworthy members of the society. Another case that lead to lose of dignity is the way that diseases they are suffering from was contracted. If the disease suffered from by a dying patient was as a result of their immoral behaviors then their dignity is at risk in the society. They are not again honored in the society. This therefore heightens the sense of hopelessness and depression on the end of life patients (Virdun et al 2015). The loss of dignity makes the patient not to desire to live anymore. This results to the “fast” death of the end of life patients.
