The sudden shift to online learning and the closure of campuses has brought many challenges and changes to the education system. This essay will examine the impact of COVID-19 on higher education, with a focus on the shift to online learning and the effects on student mental health.
One of the most notable impacts of COVID-19 on higher education has been the shift to online learning. With campuses closed and in-person classes suspended, many universities and colleges have had to quickly adapt to providing instruction and resources online. This sudden shift has brought many challenges, such as lack of access to technology and internet, difficulty in maintaining engagement, and lack of human interaction (Harvey, 2020). A study conducted by the University of California found that online learning led to a decline in student satisfaction, engagement and sense of belonging (Harvey, 2020).
