The Impact of COVID-19 on Healthcare Workers' Mental Health
COVID – 19 is a disease caused by a novel coronavirus now referred to as acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2). The illness was named COVID-19 by WHO to avoid stigmatization in the region, and population of origin. COVID-19 was first identified after an outbreak of respiratory sickness cases in Wuhan, China (Rodríguez & Sánchez, 2020). This was then reported WHO on 31st December 2019. The first case of COVID-19 was reprted in the United States on 20th January 2020. Later on, 30th January 2020, WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global health emergency, and on 11th March, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic (Rodríguez & Sánchez, 2020). The symptoms of COVID-19 appear at least two to fourteen days after catching the virus and may range from chills, fever, shortness of breath and coughs (Shaukat et al., 2014). The disease keeps spreading all over the world and threatens the health lives of many people. Therefore, the number of COVID-19 cases is subject to change based on additional reporting. However, as of 26th January 2020, 99.7 COVID-19 reported cases and 2.14 million deaths worldwide had been announced. In the United States alone, there are 23.7 million reported cases and 42000 deaths so far (Callaway, 2020). The pandemic has placed healthcare workers on enormous strain. Furthermore, it causes physical health problems and has a significant impact on physicians and other frontline healthcare professionals' mental health.
