Marijuana is the dried flowers, leaves, and stems from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant mostly used as a mind stimulant for recreation, a herb, or medicine for curing diseases. According to a poll done in 2017, close to 52% of American adults have smoked marijuana at a point in their life. The drug is thought to have been introduced in the U.S. in the 20th century by Mexicans who migrated into the country. The objections to the abuse of marijuana begun during the movement against alcohol in the county. Some said that the Mexican immigrants demonized the drug, but others justified its use. This paper analyses the advantages and the disadvantages of the use of marijuana on the debate to legalize it or not in the U.S.
Prohibition of marijuana is an intrusion into a person’s freedom of choice from the government. Individuals have raised this concern in support of this motion. They argue that every individual has their freedom of choice, and before one makes a choice, they must have thought about its consequences (Cattermole, 2017). If a person decides to smoke marijuana, the government has no right to arrest them or to table such a motion to make it illegal; instead, the government should let people enjoy their freedom in peace and without interference. They argue that it is
