Introduction
Slavery has been a contentious subject in the United States, with various scholars and leaders have sought to address the issue on different occasions in the country's history. One of the notable individuals who explored the subject of slavery and the impact it had on the black people, as well as their pursuit of freedom, as outlined in the United States Constitution was Fredrick Douglas. In his speech which was delivered on July 5th, 1852 in the Corinthian Hall, Fredrick Douglas explored how the nation and more so, the white majorities continued to reap from slavery which they despised and sabotaged from taking place internationally, and supported it internally (Douglass,n.p). The examination of slavery and what the independence celebrations have meant for Americans who have had to live with the scourge of slavery was a crucial speech that helped bring to the limelight the inconsistencies of the United States Constitution and how it was used to entrench the menace. In this argumentative essay, we shall examine the shortcomings of the United States Constitution, pose a question, and undertake to answer the query by using Fredrick Douglas speech.
The United States Constitution although having been developed with the intention of ensuring that all men, enjoyed similar liberties and privileges in the newly formed nation, politicians and some sections of the American society found loopholes to challenge some of the clauses contained in the Constitution such as Amendment 13 which prohibits slavery (Bray et al., n.p). The lack of a detailed out articles and sections within the Constitution banning the perpetration of slavery within the country was one of the aspects that Fredrick argued helped contribute to the proliferation of the menace since the whites living in the northern states misinterpreted the Constitution (Buccola, n.p).
