The Great Depression completely changed how people lived their lives in America. For farmers who were used to raising their food, the hot summers and cold winters took a toll on them. They not only lost their crops and cattle. A majority lost hope and migrated across America, having no money to purchase groceries and make payments for the farm. Farmers became among the biggest loser in terms of finance during this tough time. However, from tough times, farmers had to learn and put into practice specific skills and methods.
With the biting hunger all over, farmers learnt to treat food with respect and take it as precious. There was nothing like throwing away food. Wasting food became an unaffordable luxury. As part of understanding that wastage was a luxury, people cooked and ate as a family. Leftovers were kept for the following day. Cooking was done from scratch. Every ingredient could be obtained from the farm, be it the flavourings or the food to be cooked.
