New Gilded Age
The guided age represents an era between 1870 and 1900, a period of serious social problems. Inequality of income was one of the most widespread problems faced by the lower class, mainly immigrants who had moved to the United States searching for greener pastures. The image from the gilded age represents Jay Gould, Russell Sage, Cyrus Field and Cornelius Vanderbilt seating on bags of money on a boat carried by workers. The image represents the unequal distribution of wealth, where the ruling class took all the money at the expense of the workers who did all the dirty work. The artist’s representation in the picture is correct since even in the contemporary world, social inequality is present, especially the large gap between the rich and the poor (Glickman & Lawrence). For instance in the United States, 43.3 percent of the population live in abject poverty, while one percent 1 percent earns almost double the total income.
