The Republic of Plato is the first treatise on education and government that the Western civilization possesses. This Socratic dialogue made known the problems that mankind struggled with unconsciously or consciously ever since it had an education and a society that was organized. He treats the education subject as a major part of the wellbeing of a society. Plato treats education as a way of achieving justice, both social justice and individual justice. Ferrari, G. R. F. (Ed.). (2000). The aim of education which is ultimate is to equip people with knowledge of what is virtuous. According to Plato, a society that is just always attempts to give the best education to its members in regards to how capable they are. Plato's theory of education has raised a lot of core debates and many implications as far as the current education is concerned.
The Academy, founded in 387 BC by Plato was the first higher learning in Greece. It lasted for more than 900 years and was dissolved in 529 AD by Justin with the help of Pagan institution. It was the first University in Europe's history and achieving philosophic truth which was final was the ultimate objective that The Academy had. Discussions, arguments, asking questions and finding answers was the method of teaching at The Academy. When Plato got a chance to give lectures, dialogue and discussion was his major method. This method is what is referred to as seminar classes in the modern day. The Academy taught only four subjects which are geometry, Astronomy, Mathematics, and Philosophy.
