Various steps take place during a Linux system bootup process. There are two types of processes that take place where one uses the BIOS while the other uses the more modern UEFI. BIOS stands for basic input/output system which manages and checks the integrity of the hard drives and runs the bootloader program. UEFI offers better security, better boot times, support for larger hard drives and mouse cursors and graphics according to Harmer (2011). This paper focusses on the BIOS boot process which is found in older systems.
Firstly, when power on button is pressed the BIOS runs the POST(Power On Self Test) which checks the hardware to see if there are problems. POST has nothing to do with Linux and it is performed on any computer system before it can boot up. However, it is controlled by the BIOS which was designed to initialize hardware components.
