The Impact of Cybercrime Awareness among The Elderly Population

Since technology development, big data, social networks, and online transactions have dominated the world, sharing information through automated services. Information technology presents data breaches causing long-lasting risks, which is the widely accepted knowledge and the assumption by the elderly population that requires coordinated efforts to protect people from losing their properties. The development of technologies has elevated the number of attacks in the economic, social, and political spheres. Cybercrime is a term widely used that describes technological attacks and breach of data privacy that causes immense damage to the victims. The rate of unauthorized entry to access data from secure networks, programs and networks has increased with no probability of returning to normalcy (Bendovschi, 2015). The parties affected by the information breach range from a particular person to small and big corporations whose unprecedented impact remains disturbing. Every year, cybercrimes escalate the number of the bigger attacks, defeating the security system for the big corporation hence compromising data security, which affects business continuity, essentially affecting customer loyalty and trust towards a specific brand of the company.
Literature Review
According to (Kaur, Sharma, & Singh, 2015), the history of cybercrime started way back in 1820, which was considered before the computer development in Japan, China, and India and was done through abacus. In the modern world, the concept of cybercrime was formally introduced by Charles Babbage through an analytical engine. The loom was produced by a textile producer based in France, Joseph Marie. The production device enabled the duplication of the weaving series in the manufacturing of fabrics, which increased production and created apathy among the workforce at the company since their employment stood threatened. For fear of their livelihoods being endangered, the employees initiated sabotage of output, which derailed the company from adopting the new technology, becoming the first registered cyber-attack globally. This occurrence gave birth to multiple cyber-attacks comprising denial of service attacks, disallowed access and hacking, virus and worm attacks, cyber trafficking, phishing, forgery, cyberwar, cyber terrorism, and attacks of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which the elderly population perceives as wrong since it violates human rights of privacy.
