The Youth Justice System is failing vulnerable young people
Offences committed by young people are on the rise and the youth justice facilities in place to hold these young people are at capacity (Wahlquist, 2019). The current system does not seem to be working to deter young people from committing crime or to prevent reoffending. This essay will look at three areas in which young people may be being let down. The first is to look at why young people commit offences in the first instance and what can be done to support young people to make better choices. The second is to look at how the current juvenile detention centres care for young people and work to try and change their behaviour. Finally the return to the community will be explored looking at the support young people receive in resettling into their communities post detention. These three areas highlight the failings of the youth justice system in regards to vulnerable young people and also the communities these young people are from.
Young people may turn to crime for many reasons however large amounts of research have been conducted into this area and the findings show consistency between a lack of education, poverty and experiences of abuse. (Cunneen & White, 2011). General Strain Theory (Agnew 2006) is a way of looking at behaviours with the view that for certain individuals barriers in society prevent them from being able to reach their goals, these barriers can result in individuals having to find other means of achieving these goals.
