Types of welfare States
The three common welfare states widely recognized and employed in many states are liberal, social democratic, and conservative. Social democratic, or the Nordic model, is primarily characterized by having high taxes, a high degree of the income distribution, increased participation of women in the labor market, improved living standards of its citizens, and a high level of confidence in their public systems. Again, a conservative welfare state is primarily characterized by a low level of participation of women in the labor market, high dependency on social contributions with low taxes, moderate redistribution of income, and higher levels of unemployment ("Learn Europe: Models of the Welfare State in Europe," 2022). Lastly, the liberal model is mainly characterized by low levels of nations' spending, high inequality levels, and low expenditure on the nation's social protection fund.
Similarly, it is also evident that the three welfare states can be predominant in one country. At the outset, the social democratic, or the Nordic model, is primarily heavily in use in nations such as Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Sweden ("Learn Europe: Models of the Welfare State in Europe," 2022). Additionally, the conservative welfare state is observed in more than five countries, such as Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Turkey, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Lastly, we have the liberal model, primarily in nations such as Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
