Introduction
In this post, I will address the attachment theory. I will address the learning outcomes including the underpinning of the attachment theory, definition of the key concepts of the theory, and application of the attachment theory to clinical practice by providing arguments to support my assertions. An attachment theory is a primary bond between the parent and caregivers, providing security to the infants by being available and responsive to their needs. The bond between the child and the parent is crucial in the early years of development, especially in the first six years. According to the attachment theory, a nurse-patient relationship detects health outcomes using the theory and advises the caregivers appropriately. Trained and qualified professionals should observe the relationship between the parent and their infants and advise them on the importance of certain behaviors such as eye contact, teaching them body movements and verbal communication, and associating them with immediate and family members.
Nurses should assess the infant-parent attachment style and advice on behaviors to strengthen the bond between the parent and the child. Attachment assessment can only be done through close monitoring of the child’s behavior when near caregivers by trained professionals who are experts in psychology (Karakaş et al., 2021). For instance, a nurse should teach the parent about the four stages of attachment development: asocial, attachment in making, clear cuts, and formation of a reciprocal relationship.
