My top three strengths are planning, problem-solving, and communication, which are key in molding me into a good supervisor. The top three weaknesses are time management. Delegation and empathy, when not addressed, may act as barriers preventing me from becoming an excellent supervisor. Planning, one of my greatest strengths, is key in any management position. Similar to leaders, managers are responsible for setting future goals and determining strategies for achieving the set goals. Planning calls for awareness of environmental conditions influencing the organization and its goals, as well as forecasting likely future conditions. Planning skills will help me, as a supervisor, develop goals to be achieved and how they will be achieved. That means I will be able to make strategic planning, tactical planning, and operational planning. As a good planner, I will be able to help the organization I work for realize its capabilities and strategies, tactics, and operations that it can implement to maximize performance.
I developed my planning skills since when I was a primary school kid. With my parents working for long hours, I was responsible of multiple house chores and looking after my siblings when I was not at school. Our house help significantly helped me plan how to complete all the tasks and do them efficiently. I also learned to plan my time to ensure that I attend to all assignments in school. One essential point I learned from my parents is failure to plan is planning to fail, and thus, I always plan my next day before I sleep. That ensures I understand what I must do when I wake up, what should follow, and when. The Mosley Supervisory Management course has significantly helped me develop my planning skills and learn how to sustain the skill. For example, I have learned to incorporate critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving. Critical thinking refers to the objective evaluation and analysis of a problem before making a final judgment. Through critical thinking, I will be able to evaluate and analyze all components of a plan to examine their relevance and validity, thus increasing the chances of the plan’s success. These three skills are critical to developing and accessing skills before, during, and after executing them.
