1.0 Executive Summary
Currently, organizations are increasingly focusing on concerns that impact both productivity and cost due to increase competition in business. Absenteeism at the workplace is one of those issues. Studies estimate that more than 10 million working days are lost each year due to employee absence, thus resulting in massive losses in business (Allen, 1984). For that reason, absence management is becoming a major priority for companies. Studies have shown that several organizations do not examine the indirect costs of absence. Research indicates the leading cause of absence at the workplace to be genuine sickness. However, motivation, family responsibilities, as well as domestic responsibilities also affect absenteeism at the workplace. Various techniques can be implemented in the workplace to address or minimize absenteeism. For instance, disciplinary procedures, return to work interviews, including family-friendly initiatives. Besides, several studies recommend firms adopt a sick pay scheme to reduce employee absence.
