Students with disabilities have certain distinct needs that need to be considered during classroom management. In an inclusive school, modifications in the learning environment are a necessity for these students to learn and take part in various school activities. This paper describes some modifications that are made to suit students who require special education needs attributed to one or more disabilities.
One of the essential modifications is the physical planning of the classroom such as the arrangement of the desks and positioning of learning tools as well as lighting. For students with physical disabilities such as the deaf or hearing impaired moveable chairs are suitable as they enhance their ability to understand the tutor. Another suitable modification to this group is positioning of the source of light behind the students since their visual ability is best when the light source is behind them. The teacher must avoid, at all times, having the students face the light source. Control of the noise level is also vital as most important as most students with hearing impairments rely on rely on hearing aids. All background noise including echo must always be avoided. These modifications give high learning outcomes and provide active participation of these students which are in line with the professional ethics (Fiedler & Van Haren, 2009).
For students with learning disabilities, modifications on their assessment and exams which gives clarity on key issues. This could include highlighting the key words to boost their understanding or giving memory cards to those who are memory-impaired. These accommodations will enable such students to demonstrate their expertise in the subject.
Timetable modification for students with emotional and psychiatric disturbances would also be important to allow these students to counselling and other psychological services. Appropriate advice on the role of counselling eliminates feeling of stigma. Since such students face many difficulties such as fatigue and organization in learning more accommodations could also be allowed (Kozleski, Mainzer & Deshler, 2000). These include; allowing reasonable absenteeism, allowing more time for exams and assignment timeline.
