The article was published in 2019 and relates to improvement of employees’ engagement using artificial intelligence and data. Romeo (2019) cites the case of Microsoft which collected data from its employees with the aim of making changes in their human resource. The data showed high levels of dissatisfaction including 700 employees in one department.
Microsoft sort the services of a data analytics company which helped them process the data. The data showed employees spent a lot of hours in meetings, often meeting up to twenty people in a single meeting. Microsoft also noted that employees performed excellently after transferring to other divisions (Romeo, 2019). However, such transfers was barred by the company and required at least 18 months services at their current division and an approval from their supervisor (Romeo, 2019). Results also showed employees spent a lot of their time reviewing and replying to emails. Microsoft implemented changes ranging from easing the transfer ban allowing employees to transfer to other divisions quickly, and encouraged time away from emails. Romeo (2019) contents that data analysis worked for Microsoft.
According to the article, AI have the ability to improve employees’ productivity, and efficiency and analyze workers’ engagement. However, Romeo (2019) warns that employers using AI should not make their workers feel they are being watched constantly. Heightened scrutiny of employees can have an adverse impact if leaders fail to explain purpose of the scrutiny (Romeo, 2019).
