A whistleblower is a person who, without any form endorsement reveals private or confidential information regarding an organization that is normally related to misconduct or wrongdoing (Rothlin & McCann 2016). The actions of a whistleblower are commonly enthused by a commitment to the public interest. Initially, whistleblower was a term that was used for servants who reported on governments’ corruption, and mismanagement. The word has since been adopted by employees who report misconduct in organizations (Rothlin & McCann 2016). There are internal and external whistleblowers. Internal whistleblowers report misconduct, indiscipline, and fraud to seniors in the organization. In external whistleblowing, the whistleblower reports the wrongdoing within an institution to individuals outside the institution, for instance, to the media, police, or high government officials.
Promoting Whistleblowing in an organization
Whistleblowing comes with a lot of advantages to the organization. Therefore many the government and some organizations have come up with mechanisms that would promote internal and external whistleblowing. According to Hoffman and McNulty (2017), there is a strong whistleblower protection law in the world today. As such, if the management of an organization fails to act upon whistleblowing tips internally, the involved parties can decide to report to the external enforcers like the police and the media because they are legally protected by the law. The introduction of the whistleblowers-protection act has provided some protection to the whistleblowers through the law, in general, has proved an appropriate vehicle to retaliatory behavior. These have helped the whistleblowers speak out when they realize an illegal activity.
